Core Values
Population, Health, and Environment (PHE) is an integrated approach that recognizes the deep and complex connections between human well-being and the natural world.

PHE programs work at the intersection of three key areas:

1. Population
Access to reproductive health and family planning services empowers communities to make informed choices about childbearing and supports gender equity.

2. Health
Improving healthcare, including maternal and child health, nutrition, and disease prevention, strengthens communities and enhances quality of life.

3. Environment
Sustainable management of natural resources—such as forests, fisheries, and water sources—protects ecosystems and ensures long-term resilience for both people and the planet.
Rather than treating these issues in isolation, the PHE approach addresses them together—because they are inherently interconnected. For example, when women in coastal communities can access both family planning and livelihood resources, they are better equipped to support their families and protect local marine ecosystems.
The importance of PHE
-
It builds resilient, thriving communities that can adapt to climate change and environmental challenges.
-
It ensures that health and environmental goals are mutually reinforcing, not competing.
-
It puts people at the center of conservation—ensuring that policies are equitable, inclusive, and grounded in local realities.
By recognizing the links between people, their health, and the environment, PHE creates more sustainable, just, and impactful solutions for today’s global challenges.
